President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has sent condolences to the UN Secretary General and to the President of Peru, following the passing away of Javier Pérez de Cuéllar, former United Nations Secretary-General and former Prime Minister of Peru.

In separate messages sent to the Secretary-General of the UN, António Guterres, and the Peruvian President, Martín Vizcarra Cornejo, President Solih expressed that he is deeply saddened by the passing of Javier Pérez de Cuéllar.

In his message to the UN SG António Guterres, President Solih highlighted that Javier Pérez de Cuéllar successfully negotiated a number of peace agreements during a turbulent time in world politics. Adding that his words and actions embodied the values of the United Nation, President Solih noted Javier Pérez de Cuéllar's pursuit of world peace ensures his legacy as an accomplished mediator.

In his message to the Peruvian President Martín Vizcarra Cornejo, President Solih noted that Pérez de Cuéllar was a skilful diplomat and a successful statesman with accomplishments that resonate to this day. President Solih also added that his passing is a loss to our collective memory of peacebuilding and leadership of Peru in the international sphere.

In conclusion, The President conveyed heartfelt sympathies to the Government and the people of Peru, on behalf of the Government and the people of Maldives.
