At the invitation of President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, Prime Minister of Pakistan His Excellency Muhammad Nawaz Sharif and Begum Kalsoom Nawaz Sharif have arrived in the Maldives this afternoon.

The Pakistani Prime Minister and Begum Kalsoom were greeted on arrival at the Ibrahim Nasir International Airport, by President Yameen and Madam Fathimath Ibrahim. Upon arrival, Pakistani Prime Minister then proceeded to inspect a Guard of Honour by the Maldives National Defence Force.

After arrival, President Yameen and First Lady met with the Pakistani Prime Minister and Begum Kalsoom in the VVIP Lounge of Ibrahim Nasir International Airport.

The Prime Minister is making the visit on the invitation of the President and will partake as the Guest of Honour in the 52nd Independence Day celebrations of the Maldives.

During the two day visit, the leaders of the Maldives and Pakistan will engage in bilateral talks of mutual interest for both countries and their peoples, following which a number of memorandums of understanding are to be signed.

This year’s Independence Day also falls on the 52nd Anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations with Pakistan on 26th July 1966. Pakistan was one of the first countries to recognize the Maldives as an independent nation.
