President Mohamed Nasheed has reaffirmed government’s continued commitment to providing permanent shelter for the remaining tsunami displaced persons.

Speaking in his weekly radio address on Friday as the country prepares to mark the sixth anniversary of the devastating Asian tsunami, the President said, “Government’s goal is to find better alternatives” for all needy people in the country.

In his address, the President updated that except 50 houses, the rest were at different stages of completion, while funds for the remaining 50 houses were included in the 2011 budget.

Maldives has been marking 26th December as Unity Day to commemorate the unprecedented national response following the 2004 tsunami.

This year’s programmes, which are jointly organised by the National Disaster Management Centre, UNDP and Maldivian Red Crescent, include observing a moment of silence throughout the country.

The moment of silence will take place on the streets of all inhabited islands between 9.10 am – 9.20 am on Sunday.
