President Mohamed Nasheed has this afternoon departed on an official visit to Sri Lanka.

He is visiting Sri Lanka to attend the inauguration of President Mahinda Rajapaksa for a new term in office.

At a press conference held at the President’s Office this afternoon, before his departure, the President said he would also hold discussions with Sri Lankan government about establishing a currency swap arrangement between both countries.

During the visit, the President is accompanied by Speaker of the People’s Majlis Abdulla Shahid and Special Envoy of the President Ibrahim Hussain Zaki. Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Ahmed Shaheed and Minister of Defence and National Security Amin Faisal will also join the President’s delegation from Colombo.
