President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom stated that the bridge to be built between Malé and Hulhulé was associated with the hopes of many. The President made the statement in his address to the nation on the occasion of the New Year.

In his address, President Yameen wished a very happy new year to all Maldivians and highlighted that, with the grace of the almighty Allah, the past year had been one filled with joy and prosperity. He also acknowledged that during the past year, actions were successfully taken to maintain public peace and to further develop the country's economy.

The President highlighted that we were welcoming 2016 with the commencement of work on the bridge between Malé and Hulhulé; a milestone representative of the numerous successes of 2015. The President added that the bridge would prove a sturdy landmark in the country's recent history and reaffirmed that it would be complete and operational in 2018.

President Yameen underscored that the budget passed for the year would lead to more development. He stated that it would instigate many development projects and be further used to bring the projects started in 2015 to fruition. Additionally, he stated that since many projects were currently underway, cooperation from the public would be needed to bring those to a successful conclusion.

Underlining that the new year was to be marked “Visit Maldives Year 2016”, the President pointed to the many activities to be conducted throughout the year to attract the targeted number of tourists. This would lead to positive economic growth and more jobs, the President said.
