President Mohamed Nasheed has said the immediate redevelopment of Malé was essential for the development of the rest of the Maldives.

Speaking to inaugurate “Veshi Fahi Malé” – Greater Malé Development Programme, this morning, President Nasheed said with the available resources and potential for growth, Maldivians were entitled to a better standard of living.

In this regard, he said, during the past two years, the government was working to fulfil its pledges and ensure people received the full benefit of the country’s rich resources. He added that the government had been able to achieve some of its goals.

Noting the inequalities between Malé and the rest of the country, the President said these inequalities have resulted in congestion and appalling living conditions for the people of Malé.

In his address, the President assured the people of Malé, the government’s commitment to improve the living conditions and quality of life in Malé.

The President said none of the planned development for Malé would be funded by the government budget but rather would be carried out through public private partnerships.

Greater Malé Development Programme initiated by Malé Municipality, today aims to combine the development of Malé, Vilingili, Guli Falhu, Thilafushi, Hulhumalé and Malé International Airprt to decongest Malé. A number recreation facilities will also be established in Malé under the programme.
