State Dignitary, former Speaker of the People’s Majlis, and former Minister of Atolls Development, Uz. Abdulla Hameed has passed away on Tuesday, in Bangalore due to heart disease. He was 76 years of age, at the time of his demise.

Late Uz. Abdulla Hameed was the older half-brother of President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, and the younger brother of former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.

Late Uz. Abdulla Hameed began his employment in the Government on 28 May 1952, serving longest in the atolls administration department. He has served as the Deputy Minister of Provincial Affairs, Minister of Provincial Affairs, Minister of Atolls Administration, and Minister of Atolls Development.

Late Uz. Abdulla Hameed has also served as the Speaker of the People’s Majlis, Deputy Speaker of the People’s Majlis, and Member of People’s Majlis appointed by the President.

Other posts he took on include Minister of Education and Minister of State for Cultural Affairs. Later on, Uz. Abdulla Hameed was appointed as Senior Minister at the President’s Office.

Uz. Abdulla Hameed was conferred the Order of Distinguished Rule of Izzuddeen by former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.

Late Uz. Abdulla Hameed’s most notable services include his contribution to the development of the Hulhule Airport during Late Former President Ibrahim Nasir’s administration. Uz. Abdulla Hameed also played a major role in the development of the atolls, and the education sector of the Maldives, during former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s administration. Late Uz. Abdulla Hameed was a renowned Dhivehi literary figure.

Late Uz. Abdulla Hameed was survived by 11 children, and 23 grandchildren.
