Vice President Dr Mohamed Waheed has today met with the European Union Delegation. EU Delegation was headed by Head of Operations of EU Delegation to Sri Lanka and the Maldives Mr Willy Vandenberghe.

Speaking at the meeting held at the President’s Office this morning, Vice President Dr Waheed expressed his appreciation for the findings of country evaluation report on European Commission’s cooperation with the Maldives.

The Vice President reiterated that the government took the report’s findings in good spirit and that the government would follow its recommendations in designing future development projects.

EU held a stakeholder seminar yesterday to share the findings of the EU country assistance evaluation report. The Vice President also participated in the seminar.

At the meeting, Mr Vandenberghe said all government authorities welcomed the report. He said the Maldives now had an opportunity to draw up plans for more sustainable development programmes.

During the meeting, the Vice President and EU Delegation discussed, in depth, the two main areas of EU assistance to the Maldives: the government’s anti-drug mandate and change climate adaptation.

In addition, the Vice President also noted the EU’s support in ushering a modern democracy in the Maldives and expressed his confidence of continued EU support to consolidate democracy in the Maldives.
