Ambassador of Italy accredited to the Maldives, His Excellency Fabrizio ‎Pio Arpea has paid a courtesy call on President Abdulla Yameen Abdul ‎Gayoom. The meeting was held this morning at the President’s Office.‎

At the meeting, President Yameen and Ambassador Arpea ‎discussed bilateral relations between the two countries and expressed ‎hopes of further strengthening these relations. ‎ ‎In this regard, discussions ‎were held on extending cooperation between ‎the ‎two countries in ‎education, health and tourism sectors.‎

Underscoring his Government’s agenda for economic development and ‎expansion of opportunities for trade and investment, President Yameen ‎briefed Ambassador Arpea ‎ on the Government strategies to create a more ‎favourable foreign investment climate in the country. President Yameen ‎also expressed his appreciation for Italy’s continued assistance ‎and ‎support to the socio-economic ‎development of the Maldives. ‎

Highlighting the close relationship the Maldives has with Italy, ‎Ambassador Arpea reassured of his Government’s continuous support and ‎cooperation to the Maldives. He also noted that, after recent less ‎favourable trends in tourism arrival numbers from Italy as a result of the ‎economic crunch across Europe, there is growing enthusiasm in traveling ‎abroad, including sought-after destinations such as the Maldives.‎

President Yameen was joined at the call by the Minister at the President’s ‎Office, Hon. Mohamed ‎Hussain Shareef, and Foreign Secretary Dr. Ali ‎Naseer Mohamed.‎
