Secretary General of South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), Mr. Ahmed Saleem has paid a courtesy call on President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.
At the meeting held in the President’s Office this morning, Secretary General Saleem congratulated President Yameen on his elections victory. He also briefed the President on ongoing SAARC activities.
President Yameen and Secretary General Saleem discussed the need for strengthening SAARC mechanisms, including the Secretariat and Regional Centres.
President Yameen expressed his appreciation for the active role SAARC continues to play in promoting regional cooperation. He also emphasized the high priority that the Maldives continues to attach to SAARC.
Noting that the Maldives is the current Chair of SAARC, Secretary General Saleem expressed his confidence that the Government of Maldives would extend its fullest cooperation and support to initiatives by the Secretariat.
President Yameen was joined at the call by Ministers at the President’s Office, Hon. Mohamed Hussain Shareef and Hon. Abdulla Ameen, and the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Hassan Shifau. Secretary General Saleem was joined at the call by the Maldives’ Regional Director at the SAARC Secretariat, Mr. Ibrahim Zuhuree.
