During a meeting with Mr Fuad Thawfeeq, President of the Elections Commission, and Mr Ahmed Fayaz Hassan, Vice President of the Commission, President Dr Mohamed Waheed has called on the Elections Commission to carry out the presidential elections in accordance with the Supreme Court order. The meeting was held Tuesday morning at the President’s Office.
The Maldives’ Supreme Court, last night, annulled the September 7 presidential vote and ordered the Elections Commission to schedule a fresh vote after a candidate challenged the outcome, citing irregularities.
Speaking at the meeting, President Waheed assured that the government would give all its support and cooperation to the Elections Commission. In this regard he noted that the government would give budgetary, security, human resource and infrastructure assistance that the Commission may require.
The President said the government’s priority was to ensure that the election was held in a smooth and peaceful manner. He said it was important that everyone puts forward national interests ahead of everything else. In this regard, he said it was especially important that the integrity of the entire elections process is enhanced and maintained.
Mr Fuad Thawfeeq and Mr Ahmed Fayaz assured the President that the Elections Commission would carry out the election process as per the Supreme Court order and that the Commission would always prioritize national interest.
