President Dr Mohamed Waheed has said that it was the duty of every eligible citizen to vote in the upcoming presidential elections, and that everybody was free to vote their preferred candidate. The President made this remark while speaking to the people of Holhudhoo Island of South Miladhummadulu Atoll. The President is currently on a tour of some islands in the atoll.

In his speech, the President assured that the government would take all necessary steps to ensure that this year’s election was conducted independently and transparently.

Highlighting the state the country was in at the time of his assumption of office, President Waheed recalled that a number of foreign parties had called for his resignation and immediate re-election in the Maldives. He said that everything he did was for the people, and to protect national interest. Assuring that he had always upheld the constitution of the country, the President expressed his hopes that the upcoming elections would be a peaceful one.

In his speech, the President said that the country’s economy was picking up. Speaking in this regard, the President noted that a big percentage of the country’s debt has now been settled.
