New United Nations Resident Coordinator Mr Anthony E. Lisle has presented his credentials to President Dr Mohamed Waheed.
Speaking at the meeting held at the President’s Office this afternoon, the President congratulated the new Resident Coordinator and welcomed him to the Maldives.
The President highlighted the institutional reform that was needed in the country and said that all the Ministries were eager to work with the UN in bringing about the reform. He especially focused on the challenges being faced in the judiciary, education and health sectors of the country.
The President also underlined the difficult fiscal situation of the country, and informed the Resident Coordinator of the revenue bills that have been submitted for Parliament’s approval. He expressed confidence of continued UN support for the Maldives in strengthening democracy in the Maldives.
At the meeting, Mr Lisle commended the tremendous progress made by the Maldives in many areas. However, noting that there were still areas of need of development, Mr Lisle assured President Waheed of UN support for the Maldives during his term.
The Resident Coordinator said that sustainable development is not possible without smoothing the democratic process, and spoke of the importance of maintaining peace during the elections. He also expressed his optimism that the Maldives will find solutions to its own problems.
