President Mohamed Nasheed, in his weekly radio address, has said Australian government has increased its assistance to the Maldives. President Nasheed said he held in-depth exchange of views and discussions with the Prime Minister Rudd and other senior officials.

Yesterday, Australian government announced a new package of aid and assistance for the Maldives. The assistance package announced is in addition to support already pledged by Australia during the Maldives Donor Conference in March.

In this week’s radio address, the President also highlighted the importance he attached to giving a weekly radio address, which marks one year since he started to give a weekly radio address.

Describing it as a great “opportunity” to spend some time with the people of the country, President said:

“I am not addressing people of a particular party, organisation, atoll, ideology, or a philosophy”, adding that radio was an opportunity to speak on the important issues of the day.

The President concluded his address discussing the importance of radio as a great means of communications, information and entertainment.
