The new French Ambassador to the Maldives, Mrs. Christine Robichon, has presented her Letter of Credentials to President Mohamed Nasheed at a function held this afternoon at the President’s Office.
After the presentation, the President and the Ambassador discussed bilateral relations between the two countries and ways to further strengthen these relations.
The President thanked the government and the people of France for its assistances towards the development of the Maldives. He especially noted the support and cooperation provided by French government towards the democratisation and reform process of the Maldives.
The President noted that there were many challenges in consolidating democracy in the country and expressed confidence that the Maldives would continue to receive French cooperation in this regard.
Ambassador Robichon said the French government supported President Nasheed’s role in the global effort to combat climate change, as well as the Maldivian government’s respect of human rights and good governance.
She also expressed French government’s willingness to continue the good relations that were established during the Copenhagen Summit and to increase collaboration in climate change issues.
Vice President Dr Mohamed Waheed, Special Envoy of the President Ibrahim Hussain Zaki, Advisor on Political Affairs Hassan Afeef and Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Ahmed Naseem were also present at the meeting.
