Highlighting the need for constitutional reform, President Dr Mohamed Waheed has said that we should see to it that the laws that are made fit us appropriately. The President made this remark while speaking to the people of Vaadhoo, as part of his visit to the island today. The President is currently on a tour of some islands of the North Maalhosmadulu Atoll.
The President said that those laws that are made should cater to our fiscal state and tradition, and also should pave the way towards our aspirations for the future.
The President further noted that great conflict is sometimes encountered between institutions because of the way the current constitution was shaped. Continuing in this regard, President Waheed highlighted the difficulties often faced in carrying out his constitutional duties. He said that the whole system would be complete only when the power, authority and responsibility rendered to a particular position by the constitution, was properly carried out.
President Waheed emphasized the importance of letting each institution use their powers in executing their constitutional duties. Speaking in this regard, he said that the Supreme Court holds the final decision in solving any issues regarding the constitution, and that everyone should respect its decision. The President said that continuing to disrespect the decision of the Supreme Court would mean that the constitution is not implemented fully.
Highlighting the challenges being faced because of the political changes in the country, the President said that maintaining the peace, stability and safety in the country was most important.
