Speaking with local press at the President’s Office this morning, President Dr Mohamed Waheed has said that his visit to Kuwait has further strengthened ties between the Maldives and Kuwait.
President revealed that he discussed the water and sewerage project of Fuvamulah with the Kuwait Fund. He said the Kuwait Fund had accepted the project. He further expressed hopes that the final discussions regarding the project will be settled in the coming weeks.
He said that discussions were also held on securing assistance for the establishment of a medical centre in Hulhumale, and the development of the Ibrahim Nasir International Airport.
At today’s press conference President also gave details of his meetings with senior officials of Kuwaiti government.
Stressing Kuwait’s assistance for the development of the education sector in the Maldives, the President said that scholarship assistance would resume soon. He said that priority would be given to higher education and vocational and technical education courses. The President informed that he had met with the Kuwaiti Minister of Higher Education regarding the matter, and that the scholarship scheme would be arranged soon.
The President spoke of his meeting with members of the Kuwaiti Chamber of Commerce and said discussions were held on securing more investments to the Maldives.
The President said although relations with some Arab countries had weakened over the past few years, his administration was putting in more efforts to boost the relations with Arab countries.
