President Mohamed Waheed has appealed for concerted efforts between other enforcement institutions and the Police to enforce laws and advance national interest and stability.
Speaking at a special function to mark the 80th anniversary of the Police, on Friday evening at Dharubaaruge, the President said police service was a “very honourable” service, and it was a “necessary service” directly connected to the people. The President added that their role in protecting national interest and maintaining a peaceful environment was a significant role.
President Waheed said: “It is therefore extremely regrettable that a few in the society have been trying to defame the Police, making baseless allegations, and call them traitors to the nation.”
The President urged people to be more aware of such deliberate efforts to disrepute the Police, adding that national stability could only be achieved by according the necessary respect and honour to the Police and allowing them to do their duties.
He continued that the Police were acting within the Constitution and laws and they were operationally independent. In his speech, the President once again reiterated that he would not give unlawful orders to the police.
“It is regrettable that some people from respectable families or several people in high positions raise concern when the law is enforced against them by the police,” remarked the President. He said everyone to be responsible and prioritize national interest by promoting social harmony, peace and unity.
Outlining the drastic changes of the political landscape of the country during the past ten years, President praised the work of the Maldives Police Service to address national issues. He also recognized the support and cooperation of the families of police officers and expressed his gratitude.
