Briefing on his visit to Qatar, President Dr Mohamed Waheed has expressed his hopes of further consolidating investment cooperation between the Maldives and Qatar. The President made this statement while speaking to the local media this afternoon, on arrival at the Ibrahim Nasir International Airport.
The President noted that his visit to Qatar has further strengthened the bilateral relations between the two countries. He highlighted on his meetings with Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Al Thani, and other Cabinet Ministers of Qatar. The President also underlined plans for an investors’ delegation from Qatar to visit the Maldives, for further exploration of investment opportunities.
During his visit, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed to establish Qatari investments in the Maldives. President Waheed said that discussions of establishing an investment bank in the Maldives were also held with the Qatar Chamber of Commerce and the Qatar First Investment Bank. The President noted Qatari investors’ interest in other areas of infrastructural projects in the Maldives.
Further, President Waheed expressed his hopes for speedy arrangements to be made to facilitate scholarship opportunities for Maldivian students.
