President Dr Mohamed Waheed has urged to adopt energy efficient and environmentally friendly construction practices in the Maldives. The President made this statement while speaking at the opening ceremony of ‘BuildExpo 2012/2013’ that began today in Dharubaaruge.
Speaking at the ceremony, the President said that the current expenditure on oil has become an obstacle to economic growth and development. He further said Maldives has to adopt better strategies to sustain oil consumption.
The President remarked on the great contribution of MACI towards the development of the construction industry of the Maldives and said that the Expo was a token of such efforts.
President highlighted the strategies underway to adopt a better construction policy. Continuing in this regard he urged the Ministry to enact legislation to give effect to ‘building code’ within this year.
Continuing in this regard, the President urged MACI to extend cooperation to the Construction Ministry for the development of the construction industry.
The President spoke of the importance of ensuring the safety and the rights of the workers. He also expressed his hope to see more youth in the industry. The President further expressed appreciation of MACI’s initiatives to build a training center to train Maldivians in the field and assured of government’s support in their endeavors.
He further said that he does not believe that the investors trust in the Maldives has diminished and welcomed all the foreign investors to collaborate with other Maldivian companies to invest in the Maldives.
