Vice President Mohamed Waheed Deen has said that freedom in a real democracy is intertwined with economic freedom. He made this remark while speaking at the function to inaugurate the National Validation Workshop on Maldives Economic Diversification Strategy. The function was held this morning at Bandos Island Resort.
Vice President Deen said economic freedom empowers the people and that it liberates individuals and families from dependence on government. However, he noted that government policies and approaches in the past had increased people’s dependence on the government. He therefore, said it was important to formulate polices in a way that all citizens enjoy the benefits of national economic growth.
In his speech, the Vice President stressed the importance of decentralization which would empower grassroots. He said the role of the government should be facilitation within the legal framework.
Continuing in this regard, Vice President said the country’s economy could be broadened only by brave people and when the leaders listen to the sentiments of the people, as well as with private sector expertise.
The National Validation Workshop on Maldives Economic Diversification Strategy is organised by the Ministry of Economic Development.
