President Dr Mohamed Waheed has sent a message of congratulations to the new Prime Minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe.

The President’s message reads as follows:

Quote:

On behalf of the Government and the people of the Maldives, and on my own behalf, I have the honour to extend to Your Excellency, my sincere good wishes and congratulations on your election as the Prime Minister of Japan.

Watching the developments in Japan unfold from afar, it is clear that the country is entering a new era; one that promises a new beginning for the people of Japan. I remain confident that your Government will most ably oversee the establishment of the values of democracy within Japanese society, in which fundamental human rights can be enjoyed by all.

Japan has for a long time been a strong bilateral partner of the Maldives and I look forward to further strengthen the close and friendly relations between our two countries.

Please accept my personal best wishes for your good health and well-being and for the peace, progress and prosperity of the friendly people of Japan.
