Vice President Mohamed Waheed Deen has said that women empowerment is a necessity for the development of the country. He made the remarks while speaking at the inauguration ceremony of the Third Women Councillors’ Forum. The ceremony was held this morning at Billabong High International School.

Vice President Deen said one of the challenges in empowerment of women was the hesitancy in giving decision making roles to women.

He recognized the work done by Maldivian governments in promoting women’s rights. He also noted that Maldivian laws and regulations are also based on this. However, he said, there was a need to change some people’s outlook on the issue.

In his speech, Vice President noted that there were only a few women councillor’s in the Maldives. Highlighting the work done in establishing local governance system, he said many challenges were faced in this work. The reason for those challenges, he said, was because some people viewed local governance system was not practical in the Maldives.
