The Cabinet today discussed a proposal by Malaysian Airlines for an out-of-court settlement on the issue of Air Maldives Ltd.

Air Maldives Ltd (AML) was established in 1994 under an agreement between the government of Maldives and Malaysian Helicopter Services Berhad (later Naruli Bhd).

On 16 January 1996, a management agreement was signed between AML and Malaysian Airlines Systems Berhad. However, AML went bankrupt and stopped its operations in 2000.

After deliberating on the matter, the cabinet appointed Attorney General to explore a solution and submit a detailed statement to the People’s Majlis on the issue.

At today’s cabinet meeting, the members also decided to mark the International Year of Biodiversity in the Maldives.

The United Nations declared 2010 to be the International Year of Biodiversity.
