In his address at the opening ceremony of the forum on the “Role of Women in Future Development”, organised by the Department of Gender and Family Protection Services, President Mohamed Nasheed has spoken on development and gender issues.

He said government’s policy was to facilitate the development of women within the entire public sector.

Speaking in this regard, the President said, instead of allocating a specific ministry within the government to oversee women’s development, the policy of his administration was to identify the issues related to gender development and include them in the development policies of the government.

The President also elaborated on different perceptions of development, and highlighted the roles Women’s Development Committees in addressing the issues related to women in development.

The objective of the three-day forum being held in the Faculty of Health Sciences was to identify the areas of change for the management of Women’s Development Committees, and discuss the women’s roles in contributing to the future development of the country.

Representatives from Women’s Development Committees in the islands participate in the forum.
