Vice President Mohamed Waheed Deen has said that the Maldives could not have achieved any progress on its millennium goals without the support of the UN. The Vice President made this remark while speaking at the official function held this afternoon, to mark this year’s UN Day.

At the function held at the UN building, the Vice President reiterated the government’s commitment to achieve the Maldives’ millennium goals within the targeted time period. He especially noted the government’s determination in solving the various social issues faced today; the high youth unemployment rate, drug related problems and gang violence.

“We are in need to develop strategies and policies, most importantly the determination to address these issues. [...] This can only be achieved with the participation of all stakeholders including independent bodies, institutions, NGOs, parliament members, political parties, civil society, general public and most importantly, the government’s will and determination to achieve these goals.”

Vice President Waheed Deen expressed his appreciation for the continuous support and assistance provided by the UN in the many areas of national development, namely, in the advancement of education and health sectors, reducing poverty, and providing social protection.

“The UN is the only partner in the world community that can work together to build a peaceful world, where all human beings can live in harmony, respecting each other.”
