President Mohamed Nasheed has today met with the Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Hu Zhengyue, who was visiting the Maldives as a special envoy of the Chinese government. The meeting was held this afternoon at the President's Office.

Discussions at the meeting were focused on climate change and ways of enhancing the bilateral relations between the two countries.

President Nasheed said that the Chinese Premier played an important role at the Copenhagen Summit and that it was crucial that China to fully commit to the Copenhagen Accord.

Mr Zhengyue said that climate change was a long term challenge and that China understands the concerns of small island states such as the Maldives. He also said that China would continue to extend its assistance to the Maldives in its developmental efforts.

Both the President and Mr Zhengyue expressed confidence that the long historic relationship between the Maldives and China would continue to strengthen in the years to come.
