First Lady Madam Ilham Hussain has today inaugurated an Autism Awareness workshop for teachers. The workshop was initiated by the Education Development Center.
At the ceremony held this morning, the First Lady said that increasing awareness on autism should not be the only efforts that are being made for the wellbeing of autistic children. In her speech, the First Lady noted the importance of a curriculum designed for autistic children, introducing learning and teaching methods designed for autistic children, and development of an efficient educational environment and teachers to cater the needs of autistic children.
Noting the high number of autistic children in the Maldives, First Lady Madam Ilham Hussain called upon the government, NGOs and individuals to come forward in protecting the rights of autistic children and securing educational opportunities for them.
