President Dr Mohamed Waheed appealed to all the ministers to incorporate the youth’s ideas and suggestions in organizing societal activities. The President made this appeal while speaking at the National Youth Awards 2012 function held this evening, to mark this year’s Youth Day.

At the official function held to commemorate this year’s Youth Day, President Dr Mohamed Waheed presented this year’s National Youth Award. Awards were presented for those notable individuals in the areas of sports, crafts, performing arts, music, and social service.

A special award was also conferred to the memory of late Sergeant Adam Haleem, which was presented to his father. The late Sergeant Adam Haleem was stabbed while reporting for duty at the Kaafu Kaashidhoo Police Station in July 2012.

Highlighting the increase in number of expatriates in the country, the President said that there was much to be done in providing for the youth, and that one of the most important things to do in this regard was to facilitate education opportunities. The President also revealed that a scholarship programme would be announced tomorrow, which would assist 1500 candidates.

In his speech, President Waheed noted the high number of unemployed youth in the country, despite having educational qualification, and spoke on plans to formulate a policy that would require every child under the age of 18 to be involved in some sort of education or vocational training programme.

Speaking in this regard, the President announced that a training programme Skills Training at Resorts would commence in the near future, organized by the Ministry of Human Resources, Youth and Sports, the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, and the Ministry of Education.

President Waheed reiterated that the government will make every effort in improving youth related issues. He further said that the role of the youth should not be the least bit neglected in moving forward with the country, and that this new chapter of the democracy broadens the scope of the youth’s rights, as well as their societal responsibilities.
