President Dr Mohamed Waheed today officially opened Gaafu Alifu Kooddoo Airport. The Airport was officially opened with the unveiling of the name board of Kooddoo Airport by the President.
On arrival, the President’s flight was greeted with a water salute. Following the inauguration of the airport, a welcome item was performed by the students of Gaafu Alifu Atoll Education Centre.
At the inauguration of the Kooddoo Airport, the President noted that the government was always working on providing easier and beneficial means for the people, and that the purpose of developing an airport in Gaafu Alifu Atoll was to provide easier transportation for the people.
Speaking in this regard, the President said that developing airports in different regions of the Maldives was crucial for the growth of our tourism industry. He also said that the Kooddoo Airport would contribute to the tourism industry and the economy of the Maldives as well.
Noting that the Maldives has always been famous for its sea transportation, the President said that the development of the aviation industry would be a great source of income for the country and the people; and a major contributor to the economy. The President also underlined that the private sector and the government held great responsibilities in achieving this.
At the ceremony, a commemorative plaque was presented to President Dr Mohamed Waheed. The plaque was presented by the President of Gaafu Alifu Atoll Council Haaroon Rasheed.
Commemorative plaques were also presented to Minister of Transport and Communication Dr Ahmed Shamheed, and the Managing Director of Bonavista Maldives Pvt Ltd Mr Henry Ngo.
