President Dr. Mohamed Waheed has condemned in the strongest terms, the recent acts of violence committed against the Police Force, and called on all concerned institutions and agencies to take immediate penal action against offenders. The President made this statement while addressing the memorial service held today in Kaafu Atoll Kaashidhoo, to commemorate the death of the late Lance Corporal Adam Haleem.
In his speech, President Waheed extended his deepest condolences to the bereaved family of the late Adam Haleem and guaranteed continued governmental support to them in every possible manner.
Speaking in this regard, the President outlined the importance of laws and legislations to a civilized society in ensuring peace and security. He reminded of the critical role of the Maldives Police Force in executing these laws and legislations to facilitate the aforementioned stabilization of social harmony.
President Waheed firmly criticized the hate-mongering actions of those who stir up common hatred against the Police, and thus incite the engagement of offenders in such vile acts of physical brutality. He reiterated his stance that any attack launched on any member of the law enforcement personnel, is in reality, a grave damage incurred to the State and that taking drastic action against perpetrators was not a prerogative, solely exclusive to the President himself.
In his speech, the President expressed his deep grief and resentment over the current state of parliamentary inactivity. He requested all Parliamentarians to set aside their political differences and resume their duties as sincere representatives of their respective constituencies. He also confirmed the right of the incumbent President to observe and oversee the activities of governmental institutions, be it the Judiciary or the Parliament, as prescribed in the National Constitution.
At today’s memorial service, an Official Medal of Honor was conferred to the late Lance Corporal Adam Haleem, which was presented to his father by the President.
A minute of silence was observed as a tribute to the late Lance Corporal Adam Haleem.
