President Dr Mohamed Waheed has this afternoon departed on an official visit to India, on the invitation of Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh. First Lady Madam Ilham Hussain is accompanying the President during this visit.
Meeting the local media at Ibrahim Nasir International Airport prior to his departure, the President said that the main objective of this visit was to strengthen the existing bilateral relations between the Maldives and India. In his interview, the President noted that the political situation in the country was calming down.
During his visit, the President is also being accompanied by Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Abdul Samad Abdulla, Minister of Finance and Treasury Abdulla Jihad, and Minister of Housing and Environment Dr Mohamed Muiz.
