President Dr Mohamed Waheed has said that international recognition of the State of Palestine was no barrier to the continuation of peace talks. He made this statement while speaking at a joint press conference of President Waheed and Palestinian President Dr Mahmoud Abbas. The press conference was held this afternoon at the President’s Office.
While recognising that the security of Israel is equally important, President Waheed said that “only a viable and strong Palestine would enable Israel to achieve its own security”.
President Waheed also reiterated the Maldives’ “support for a two state solution with Palestine and Israel living side by side at peace”.
In his statement to the media, President Dr Mahmoud Abbas stated that he had “very fruitful talks” with President Waheed.
He also invited President Waheed to make a visit to Palestine at a convenient time.
