Speaking at the function to mark the 79th anniversary of police service in the Maldives, President Mohamed Waheed has called on the public to show appreciation for the services by the police and assist and cooperate with the police.
Highlighting the recent attacks on the police, President said misleading news reports were being made for political gains, without considering the damage they may cause to the country. He said the country’s economy was affected by such reports, adding that it was time the whole nation stood up against such efforts.
The President said it was an individual responsibility to protect the independence and sovereignty of the country. To defend the independence bestowed by Allah, he said, the most important thing was to respect the religion of Islam, maintain religious unity, and remain steadfast as a follower of Islam.
Stating that establishing a proper police service was necessary for public safety and security, President urged the police to respect human rights and human dignity when carrying out their duties.
In his speech, President Waheed also expressed sadness over the physical and emotional stress and damages faced by police and their families. He said the government would help improve the living standard of the police. In this regard, he said the government allocated a 74000 sq. ft. land to develop flats for them.
President also reaffirmed his commitment to uphold Islam, laws and regulations of the country, and reiterated that he would not give unlawful orders to the police.
