President Dr Mohamed Waheed today met with the Commonwealth Special Envoy to the Maldives, Sir Donald McKinnon.
Discussions at the meeting were focused on the current political situation in the Maldives.
President Waheed assured that he was open for an early election, but stressed that it could be done only within the country’s Constitution and laws. He also stated the importance of creating a calm and peaceful environment in order to hold a free and fair election in the country.
Sir Donald highlighted the need for all parties to come to dialogue to find a way forward in resolving the situation.
Commonwealth Secretary-General Kamalesh Sharma appointed Sir Donald McKinnon as his Special Envoy to Maldives on 1 March. Sir Donald is a former Commonwealth Secretary-General and former Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of New Zealand.
