Vice President Dr. Mohamed Waheed has said that, for a long time, Maldivian women have played a very significant role in the family and in the society. The Vice President made these remarks while speaking at the closing ceremony of “Training Women for Women’s Development Committee” organized by “Hidhaa” Association and UNDP, in Hithaadhoo of Baa Atoll.
Speaking at the ceremony held last evening at the Hithaadhoo School, the Vice President noted the many occasions that women have held ruling power in the Maldives. He also said that for a long time, the constituent assembly of the Maldives has had female members.
The Vice President expressed his gratitude to the UNDP and other NGOs for organising such training programmes for women. He also noted that these training programmes will allow the committees to recognize their responsibilities more clearly.
In his speech, the Vice President said that Women’s Development Committees not only work towards the development of women, but for the prosperity of the whole community. He also conveyed his hopes for an increase in women’s role in the developmental work at island level, with the establishment of Women’s Development Committees.
During his trip to Hithaadhoo, Vice President Dr. Mohamed Waheed met the Hithaadhoo Island Council and senior members of “Hidhaa” Association. He also visited the erosion site of the island.
Following the conclusion of his trip, the Vice President has arrived back in Male’ this morning.
