President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has ratified the Land Transport Bill.
The Bill was passed by the 20th People’s Majlis during the 28th sitting of its second session of 2026, held on Wednesday, 26 August 2026. The President ratified the Bill at a special ceremony held at the President's Office today.
The Act establishes a comprehensive and modern legal framework for the organisation, management and regulation of land transport in the Maldives, reflecting the country’s evolving transport needs while ensuring the safety and security of vehicle operators, passengers and other road users.
It sets out rules and standards governing vehicle operators, vehicle registration, driving, stopping, parking and the use of vehicles. The Act also establishes a regulatory framework for public transport services and provides for penalties, procedures and other measures relating to violations of the Act and its regulations.
To address transport and mobility challenges arising from the high population density in the Greater Malé Area, the Act designates the area as a “Registration and Traffic Management Controlled Zone”. It also provides for the establishment of the “Greater Malé Transport and Mobility Office” for a period of three years to facilitate the sustainable organisation, management and delivery of land transport services within the area.
In addition, the Act provides for the establishment of a National Road Safety Council to advise on matters relating to road safety. It also establishes a dedicated fund to support the development and modernisation of the land transport system.
The Land Transport Act will come into force 30 days after its ratification and publication in the Government Gazette. Upon its commencement, the existing Land Transport Act (Act No. 5/2009) and the Maldives Pedestrian Act (Act No. 70/78) will be repealed.
