Vice President Dr. Mohamed Waheed has said that it is clear that Srilankan Airlines has played a supportive role in the development of tourism in the Maldives. He made these remarks while speaking at the function held last evening, to celebrate the opening of a new Srilankan Airlines office in the Maldives, and ACE Travels being the new General Sales Agent of Srilankan Airlines to the Maldives.

The Vice President noted that Srilankan Airlines, then Air Ceylon, was the first flight to touch down in the Maldives at the Hulhulé Airport, now the Ibrahim Nasir International Airport, in 1960 when it was first opened.

Highlighting the steady and rapid increase in the number of the Airlines’ flights to Maldives over the years, the Vice President said that work was in progress to have more than 30 Srilankan Airlines flights per week, by the end of the year.

Vice President Dr. Waheed also revealed the start of the Airlines’ scheduled flights to Gan International Airport of Addu atoll during next year. This would be the first scheduled Srilankan Airlines flight to fly directly to an airport outside of Male’.
