President Mohamed Nasheed has sent a message of condolence to President Hâmid Karzai of Afghanistan following the death of former President Burhânuddîn Rabbânî.
President Nasheed's message to President Karzai reads as follows:

I was deeply shocked and outraged to learn about the death of former President of Afghanistan Mr Burhanuddin Rabbani in the suicide bomb attack on his home. The Government and people of the Maldives strongly condemn this terrorist attack and express our firm solidarity with you in the fight against terrorism.
The death of Mr Rabbani comes as an immense loss to the efforts for peace and stability in Afghanistan and I pray that the people of Afghanistan find the resolve to overcome it. On this sad occasion of national grief, the Government and the people of the Maldives and I extend our profound sympathy to you, the Government and the people of Afghanistan. Please also convey our sincere condolences to Mr Rabbani’s family.
