The Cabinet has today decided to hold a public referendum on the matter of a proposal by the council of Thinadhoo in Gaaf Dhaal Atoll to rename the island to ‘Havaru Thenadhoo’.

Following a trip to Thinadhoo Island, the President’s delegation suggested a name change and a referendum to reach a decision, which was then finalized at today’s Cabinet meeting.

“Previously Thinadhoo was known as Havaru Thinadhoo until the name was changed to Thinadhoo. Thinadhoo was not given the title ‘Havaru’ for its part in the secession and subsequent depopulation in 1962,” said President Nasheed.

The Cabinet held a workshop in G. Dh. Thinadhoo, ahead of the meeting scheduled to take place in the island this afternoon.

In today’s deliberations, Cabinet Ministers highlighted government protocol in several key sectors. Government policies on health, education, social protection, youth, sports and human resource development were defined. Additionally, presentations on infrastructure development outlined policies on good governance, discussions were focused on and consequent discussions on policies underscored.

The President and relevant Cabinet Ministers responded to queries from the general public after each presentation.

At today’s meeting, the Cabinet reviewed the progress of Technical and Vocational Educational Training Programme (TVET).

Reaffirming the government’s commitment to development, Cabinet members underlined the development projects planned for Upper North Province and the projects to be carried out under Public-Private Partnership and Public Sector Investment. The discussions included developing the roads of the island, a plan use the reclaimed land, construction of row houses, harbour development project and utilities.

Other functions mandated the utilization of alternative energy resources to come up with economic solutions to the country’s energy concerns and expedite implementation of these solutions.

Members of the Cabinet reiterated that the meeting and discussions are to be useful, as ideas were put forward by the people of Thinadhoo to advance their economy and development.
