President Mohamed Nasheed has visited Eydhafushi of Baa Atoll this afternoon.

President Nasheed, addressing the people of Eydhafushi at the ceremony to open the Residential Learning Centre in Eydhafushi, expressed his gratitude for the people of Eydhafushi for their services to the people of the country, especially for the people of Baa Atoll.

The President underscored the example set by the people of Eydhafushi in welcoming children from other islands that go to Eydhafushi for education. He stated that there were over 300 children from other islands of the country currently studying in Eydhafushi.

Residential Learning Centre opened today in Eydhafushi, was established under the Integrated Human Development Project being carried with the assistance of multilateral donor agencies to develop the country’s human resources.

The President said the Residential Learning Centre opened today would provide accommodation with parental supervision to children from other islands attending Eydhafushi schools.

In his address today in Eydhafushi, the President also elaborated on the development programmes planned by the government for the island.

Noting the completion of the island’s sewerage system, the President said funding has been earmarked in this year’s budget to provide clean water in the island.

In addition, he revealed the government’s plan to reclaim land in Eydhafushi to ease congestion in the island, and shared details of the progress of the project. He said the government was currently seeking funding through for the project through different multilateral agencies and donor countries.

Speaking in Eydhafushi, the President reiterated that the government would deliver all its electoral pledges during its term in office.

In this regard, the President especially highlighted the success of the transport network initiated by the government to connect the islands of the country through a ferry system. He said the transport network has increased the trade and benefits to island communities.

Furthermore, he said the economic reform package especially the new taxation regime proposed by the government would increase the international community’s confidence in the Maldivian economy and encourage donors to contribute additional financial support for the Maldives.

The President has arrived in Kudafari of Noonu Atoll early this evening, after concluding his visit to Eydhafushi.
