The Cabinet has finalized a procedure for conducting pre-employment background checks for criminal records.

The Cabinet decided on the procedure after deliberating on the recommendations of the Cabinet Subcommittee formed to further study the matter presented, on 7 June, by the Ministry of Human Resources, Youth and Sport.

In discussing the matter, the Cabinet members noted that youth accounted for over 43 percent of the population, and in the current job market, criminal records becomes a barrier to job seeking for many young people.

They said that under the existing system which requires five year-criminal records, barred many educated and skilled youth with minor offences from gainful employment.

Members agreed that lowering the current standards to establish good character would increase the number of skilled job seekers.

The government will announce the procedure for conducting background checks of job seekers for criminal records.
