Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress of China Wu Bangguo has praised the progress and development achieved by the Maldives under President Mohamed Nasheed’s leadership.
He said he was impressed by how, under the President’s leadership “the Maldives has successfully countered the impact of the international financial crisis, and has encouraged foreign investment, strengthened infrastructure development.”
Chairman Wu also praised the government’s initiative to provide housing for Maldivians.
Speaking at the dinner hosted by the President in honour of Chairman Wu yesterday, the Chairman underlined that “therefore, you have achieved economic progress, improved people’s livelihood.”
He added that the Maldives, especially the President, was playing an increasingly important role at the international level.
Declaring his Maldives visit a success, the Chairman said his visit has maintained the momentum of exchange of high level visits, enhanced mutual trust and advanced cooperation between the two countries.
In his remarks at the dinner, President Nasheed said “of our development partners, China is one of the most engaging and we are able to work with the Chinese government, Chinese company and Chinese societies happily and also very fruitfully.”
He thanked the Chinese government and its leadership and the people of China for their continued support for the Maldives.
Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress of China Wu Bangguo is currently on an official visit to the Maldives on an invitation of Speaker of the People’s Majlis Abdulla Shahid.
