Member of Global Leadership Foundation (GLF) and Former President of Mauritius Cassam Uteem and Secretary-General of GLF Sir Robin Christopher have paid a courtesy call on President Mohamed Nasheed today.

At the meeting held at the President’s Office, discussions were generally focused on enabling the democratic system to assist in nation building activities.

The President updated the GLF on the political leadership and governance as well as consolidation of democracy in the Maldives.

President Nasheed exchanged views with GLF on ways to strengthen the roles of three powers of the state in a democratic system of governance in which powers were separated.

He also noted the need to expand the role of civil society in democratic processes in the Maldives.

Former President of Mauritius Cassam Uteem, representing GLF, shared his views with the President on the challenges the Maldives could face being a young and developing democracy.

The meeting was also attended by Special Envoy of the President Ibrahim Hussain Zaki, National Security Advisor Amin Faisal, Foreign Policy Advisor Dr. Ahmed Shaheed and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ahmed Naseem.

The Global Leadership Foundation (GLF) is an organisation that promotes good governance for democratic institutions in open markets, human rights and the rule of law. It is a group of former leaders who have extensive experience of government and who offer to work with current world leaders on the principles of democratic institutions.

Former President of South Africa F W de Klark currently chairs the organisation.
