President Mohamed Nasheed has decided to declare Labour Day, observed worldwide on May 1 each year, a public holiday in the Maldives, beginning this year.

The decision comes after the Cabinet recommendation today highlighting the government’s commitment as well as efforts of private parties to protect and promote workers’ rights in the Maldives.

Following the decision, next Sunday, May 1, will be a public holiday in the Maldives.

May 1, International Workers’ Day or Labour Day is a public holiday in many countries.
