President Mohamed Nasheed, as part of the tour he began yesterday to some islands of Kaafu Atoll, has visited Maafushi.
During the visit, the President met with Maafushi Island Council and discussed the government’s development programmes and necessary arrangements for the delivery of the government services through the island council.
In his remarks at the meeting, the President asked the councillors to forgo the partisan politics and competitiveness during the campaign for the island council election, and work together for the development of the island.
On the development projects in the island, the President sought the Council’s view on devising a mechanism to sustainably operate the existing sewerage system in the island.
During the visit, the President visited Maafushi School. Meeting the school board at the School, the President congratulated the school board, students, teachers, parents and the people of island for significant improvement in the performance of the school in last year’s GCE Ordinary Level Exams.
60 percent of the students who sat the exam last year passed five subjects with grade ‘C’ and above. This is a 49 percent improvement in the result from the previous year.
The President also met the students who achieved the highest results in last year’s exams.
Before departing from Maafushi, the President visited Education Training Centre for Children and Maafushi Preschool. He also visited Maafushi Prison and inspected the damage to the prison buildings in the fire incident at the Prison last year.
Before visiting Maafushi, the President yesterday visited Dhiffushi and met with Dhiffushi Island Council.
At the meeting, the President asked the Council to prepare the island’s land use plan according to the Council’s vision.
He also exchanged views with the Council on the construction of island’s harbour. The government has contracted the construction of the harbour under the loan assistance from Saudi Fund, to MTCC last October.
