As part of his tour to some islands of Haa Alif and Haa Dhaal Atolls to discuss the implementation of government programmes and continuity of services through island councils, President Mohamed Nasheed has visited Baarah of Haa Alif Atoll today.
During the visit to the island, the President held talks with Baarah Island Council regarding the programmes planned for the development the island.
In this regard, he further discussed the up-to-date details of the progress of the aquaculture project to be undertaken by the Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company Limited (MIFCO) in Baarah under the government’s programme to widen aquaculture industry in the Maldives.
Among other infrastructure projects allocated for the island, the President shared the details of the establishment of sewerage system in the island contracted to Works Corporation Limited on contractor finance basis.
Further, he sought the councils view on the proposed construction of a jetty in the island’s harbour. Funding is allocated for the project in this year’s budget.
In addition, the President updated the council on the progress of construction of housing units in Baarah under the government’s housing programme. Construction of 50 out of 100 housing units to be build in Baarah has been awarded to a third party.
While in Baarah, the President visited a poultry farm operated by Rehendhi Movement, a community organisation in the island. He discussed with the organisation ways of making the project economically viable.
Before concluding the visit, the President met the board and staff of Baarah School at the school.
The President has arrived in Kelaa of Haa Alif Atoll later this afternoon.
