President Mohamed Nasheed has visited Hanimaadhoo as the first part of his tour to Haa Alif and Haa Dhaal Atolls, which he began this morning.
During the visit to Hanimaadhoo, the President met with Hanimaadhoo Island Council.
Discussions at the meeting were focused generally the government’s development programmes currently underway in the island as well as the administration of the Island Council.
The President conferred on the progress of programs conducted by the government to upgrade Hanimaadhoo Airport to an international airport.
The President also spoke on developing a 200 bed capacity hotel and the ongoing repair of Hanimaadhoo Airport jetty.
In addition, the President spoke on maximizing economic benefits of project to produce virgin coconut oil and related products in the island.
After the meeting with the Council, the President made a visit to the North Region’s Virgin Coconut Oil Processing Plant in the island.
The Plant is presently operated by the Women’s Development Committee of the Island. The women’s committee works jointly with non-profit organizations to produce virgin coconut oil and were currently seeking interest to market the product to resorts in the region.
The President, further shared the details of the government’s housing project and the proposed project to build sewerage system on the island with the Council.
President Nasheed visited Hanimaadhoo health centre, school and harbour during his visit to the island.
