In this week´s radio address, President Mohamed Nasheed highlighted the government´s progress towards achieving its housing pledge – building 10000 housing units to provide affordable housing for the people.

He revealed that construction of a total of 4710 housing units were contracted while construction of 1780 housing units were already underway.

Construction of housing units are in progress in Gaaf Dhaal Atoll Thinadhoo, Seenu Atoll Feydhoo, Gaaf Alif Kolamaafushi, Haa Dhaal Atoll Kulhudhuffushi, and Lhaviyani Atoll Naifaru.

The President said 40 percent of the work of constructing 25 housing units being build on each of these islands was now complete.

He also discussed the details of progress made in building the housing units allocated for Malé City out of 10000 housing units.

Out of all housing units to be build in Malé, 500 housing units have been contracted to Kargwal 18 SG Developers of India.

The President said construction of 350 of these 500 housing units were expected to commence in April this year.

Further, the President said 35 percent of 180 housing units being build in Hulhumalé by Coral Ville was complete.

Construction of a total of 1120 housing units in Hulhumalé were contracted to Coral Ville, while a further 1000 housing units were contracted to Seamack.

In his 89th radio address, President Nasheed also discussed the events lead by Malé City Council to show Maldivian´s solidarity with the people of Japan following the widespread loss of life and huge devastation caused by earthquake and consequent tsunami that hit Japan on 11 March.

He urged all Maldivians to participate in these events to show their solidarity with Japan, underscoring Japan´s continuous assistance and support for the development of the Maldives.

He concluded his radio address, declaring his support and encouraging the Maldives National Football Team that participate in AFC Challenge Cup qualifying round to be held in Malé next week.
