President Mohamed Nasheed has this afternoon visited Hoarafushi of North Thiladhunmathi Atoll.
Meeting the people of the island, the President congratulated students, parents, teachers, and the management of Hoarafushi School, and especially former Education Minister Dr Musthafa Lutfee for the significant improvement in the results of the students of the school in last year’s GCE O Level Examinations.
He noted that the number of students who passed at least five subjects in 2010 General Certificate of Education, Ordinary Level Examinations increased by 17 percent in Hoarafushi School compared to previous year.
Noting that the government’s aim was to ensure that at least 60 percent of students who sit GCE O Level Exams passed 5 or more subjects, the President stated that 58 percent of Hoarafushi School students passed five subjects.
Outlining the government’s education policy, the President said the government would this year build 12 additional classrooms in the School to facilitate transition to a single session school.
In addition, the President also highlighted the other development programmes for the island.
The President said the construction of the island’s harbour was expected to be completed this year, and Hoarafushi was selected to carry out the government’s programme to develop commercial activities and markets in the harbour area.
He also revealed that building of island’s water grid was budgeted for this year, and telemedicine facilities would be established in the island as part of the government’s programme to improve health services in the atolls.
The President has now arrived in Ihavandhoo after concluding his visit to Hoarafushi. He is scheduled to meet the people of Ihavandhoo later this evening.
